Radmanove mlinice: the old mills in the Cetina Canyon

Radmanove mlinice is the best-known place in the Cetina Canyon: an old mill complex on the river, shaded by tall trees, where the boats from Omiš turn round and the rafting trips come ashore.

Distances and facts checked November 2026.

What the mills are

The Cetina drove mill wheels for centuries on its way down to the sea. The Omiš tourist board dates a flour mill here to the 16th century on one of its pages, and to the 17th and 18th centuries, when the mills were first mentioned, on another. Both agree on what came next: in the 19th century the Radman family took the mills over, renovated them and gradually turned them into a summer residence. The mills kept the family’s name.

The old mill still stands, but as an attraction rather than a working mill. The complex is a restaurant and picnic ground, surrounded by tall trees, old mill wheels, a sundial and a pool of river trout, at the water’s edge 6 km from Omiš.

Winnetou on the Cetina

In the 1960s the canyon stood in for the American West. According to the Omiš tourist board, its scenery and untouched nature made Radmanove mlinice one of the locations for the Winnetou films, the German western series based on Karl May’s novels, shot between 1962 and 1969.

A busy landing

Radmanove mlinice is where the canyon’s two biggest river businesses meet: the rafts come ashore here and the boats from Omiš land here, and the management plan for the protected canyon records the overlap and the wish of both trades to keep their landings apart. In high season that means boats, rafts and diners in a small space.

The site sits in the protected landscape’s zone for visitor infrastructure. The tufa in the river is part of what the protection is for, so keep to the paths and the landing.

Nearby

  • Kaštil Slanica, another restaurant by the river, on the road back towards Omiš.
  • The zipline wires cross the canyon near the Visečki kuk ridge, between the mills and Omiš.
  • Viseć fort. The Omiš tourist board points to the fort of Viseć, not far from the mills, as the best known of the medieval forts above the Cetina.

Check opening times at the restaurant before making the trip for a meal, especially outside summer.
