The Cetina river boat trip: Omiš to Radmanove mlinice

The easiest way into the Cetina Canyon is to sit in a boat. Small passenger boats leave from the river by the bridge in Omiš and motor 6.2 km upriver, between the walls of the lower canyon, to the mills at Radmanove mlinice.

Distances and facts checked November 2026.

The lower Cetina is calm. Between the bridge in Omiš and Radmanove mlinice the river is deep and slow, so the boats that work it are ordinary small passenger boats, open or covered, some with a glass floor. The management plan for the protected canyon calls their operators barkarioli, the local word for boatmen, and lists them alongside rafting as one of the two main ways visitors use the river.

The route

From the bridge the boat heads upriver into the gap between the Komornjak and Rat ridges, the narrow slot at the river mouth that you see from the bridge. Then the canyon widens. You pass below the village of Zakučac on the hillside to the left, the restaurant at Kaštil Slanica, and the narrows of Tisne stine below the Visečki kuk ridge, where the wires of the Omiš zipline cross high above the water. The boat turns round at Radmanove mlinice, 6.2 km from the bridge, and comes back the same way.

How long, and what happens at the mills

A typical trip takes about two hours: around 40 minutes up, about 40 minutes at the mills, and around 40 minutes back. Shorter panoramic trips of about an hour also run.

At Radmanove mlinice you get off under the trees: an old mill complex turned into a restaurant and picnic ground, with the mill wheel, the trout pool and tables by the water. The stop is long enough for a drink or a short walk; a full meal needs a longer stay, so ask about a later return or walk back.

Practical points

  • Where to board. The boats leave from both banks by the bridge in Omiš. The management plan foresees a single landing on public land at Planovo in future, where the boats would pick up like a taxi rank; until that is built, ask at the bridge.
  • When. Boat trips run mainly in the warmer months. Out of season, ask in Omiš whether they are sailing.
  • Low water. In dry summers the river level drops, and the management plan notes that low water makes the boats and rafts scrape the tufa barriers in the riverbed.
  • Noise. The management plan sets out that the boats will have to switch to electric engines, with a transition period for the operators, to cut noise and fuel pollution in the canyon.
  • Other ways to the mills. On foot it is 5.9 km from the bridge along the road beside the river. The management plan also lists a small tourist train from the centre of Omiš to the mills; check in town whether it is running.

Boat, raft or canyon?

The boat sees the lower, calm canyon from the comfort of a seat. For the middle canyon and some white water, see Cetina river rafting; for the gorge and the falls at Zadvarje, canyoning. Rafting, canyoning or the boat compares all three.

Questions visitors ask

Where does the Cetina river boat leave from?
From the river banks by the bridge in Omiš, on both sides of the Cetina. Boat companies also sell trips from their stands in the town; the boat itself leaves from the river by the bridge.
How long is the boat trip to Radmanove mlinice?
The boat covers 6.2 km on the river each way. A typical round trip takes about two hours: around 40 minutes upriver, a stop of about 40 minutes at the mills, and around 40 minutes back. Shorter panoramic trips turn round sooner.
Can I take the boat one way and walk back?
Yes, if the boat company agrees to a one-way ticket. The walk from Radmanove mlinice back to the Omiš bridge is 5.9 km along the road beside the river, about an hour and a half.
Is the boat trip suitable for children and older visitors?
Yes. It is the gentlest way to see the canyon: you sit in the boat, there are no rapids on this stretch, and at the mills there is level ground with tables in the shade. Getting in and out of the boat at the river bank needs a steady step.
