Canyoning is the most physical way to see the Cetina. Instead of floating on top of the river, you go down its bed: wading, swimming through pools, sliding down smooth rock and jumping into deep water, with a guide choosing every line. On the Cetina it all happens in one place, the gorge at Zadvarje.
Where it happens

The management plan for the protected canyon names a single entry for canyoning at Zadvarje and a single exit near the Kraljevac power station. Between them the river does the most dramatic thing it does anywhere on its course: over 1.5 km its bed drops 166 m, including the two Gubavica falls. Below the falls the Kraljevac plant, built in 1912, uses the same drop to make electricity.
Companies meet in Zadvarje or collect their groups in Omiš, 30.0 km away by the inland road, and walk you down to the river from the village.
The two routes
| Beginner (basic) | Extreme (advanced) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | The gorge at Zadvarje to the exit near Kraljevac | The same gorge, with the cliffs beside the Gubavica falls |
| Length | About 3 km | Similar ground plus the abseils |
| What you do | Walk, swim, slide, jump (up to about 10 m) | All of that plus rope descents |
| Ropes | None | Abseils of roughly 50 to 60 m beside Velika Gubavica, and a shorter one later |
| Time | Half a day | Half a day or a little more |
| Who | Anyone fit and at ease in deep water | Fit adults and teenagers above the company’s minimum age |
The abseil heights differ a little from company to company, because each uses its own anchor points beside the falls. The point is the same: on the extreme trip you go down a cliff next to a 49 m waterfall.

What the company provides and what you bring
Companies provide the wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid, and on the extreme route the harness and ropes. Bring:
- Swimwear to wear under the wetsuit.
- Shoes with good grip that you can get wet. Some companies lend canyoning shoes; ask.
- A towel and dry clothes for the end.
- Nothing loose: no jewellery, no phone in a pocket.
Safety
- Go with a licensed company. Every canyoning company in the protected area works under a concession from More i krš. The concession carries nature-protection conditions, and the companies receive the power company’s warnings about planned water releases.
- Never enter the gorge alone. The river level here depends on what the reservoirs and the Kraljevac plant release, and a rise in a narrow gorge is dangerous.
- Jump only where the guide says. Depths change with the water level; a pool that is deep on one day can be shallow on another.
- Respect the tufa and the birds. The management plan lists the cliff-nesting birds of the canyon and its tufa among the values of the protected area. Stay on the guide’s line.
If you want to see Gubavica without getting wet
A viewpoint above the falls is a short walk from the main road in Zadvarje: see the Gubavica waterfall guide. For a gentler day on the water, rafting from Penšići starts just downstream, and the river boat from Omiš needs no effort at all.
